Vejigantes

Playful demon?  Opponent of colonization?  Krampus’ colorful Puerto Rican cousin?  Introducing the Vejigante - a masked and wildly-costumed folkloric character from the days of Spanish conquest and African slavery on the Island of Enchantment.  To this day, Vejigantes make their appearance during two main festivals:  Carnival, before Lent, in the south, and the Feast of St. James, in July, in the north.  Explore with us the origins and evolution of this important historical figure!

Presentamos al Vejigante, un personaje folclórico enmascarado y locamente disfrazado de los días de la conquista española y la esclavitud africana en la Isla del Encanto. Hasta el día de hoy, los Vejigantes hacen su aparición durante dos fiestas principales: el Carnaval, antes de la Cuaresma, en el sur, y la Fiesta de Santiago, en julio, en el norte. ¡Explore con nosotros los orígenes y la evolución de esta importante figura histórica!
