We take a deep dive into the life of Héctor Lavoe, the salsa king whose music still resonates decades after his 1970s and '80s peak. Known for hits like El Cantante, Mi Gente, and Aguanilé, Lavoe’s story is a rollercoaster of talent, triumph, and tragedy. From his Ponce roots to his rise in New York’s Latin music scene, we attempt to understand the man behind the myth.

In Part 1, we discuss Lavoe’s humble beginnings, his early success, the underside of the music business, where the name "Lavoe" came from, and the meaning behind Aguanilé.
